Pre-pandemic, the weekly street fair Vegan Exchange would shut down an entire city block in North Hollywood, bringing more than 50 vendors and thousands of hungry patrons together for everything from fried mushroom bao to plant-based shrimp baskets to flaky vegan pop tarts. But everything changed when one weekend, I was introduced to what has become one of my greatest loves: Lettuce Feast. As a former fried chicken aficionado, I couldn’t believe the menu at this Black-owned, Southern-style fried chicken truck run by Eva Cannon and Willie Perrymon. The Nashville Sando is a classic—a massive, juicy, hand-breaded plant-based chicken patty served at varying levels of spice and topped with cool vegan ranch, pickle chips, and tangy slaw. But just as I was about to surrender to it, I spotted my true sandwich destiny: The Triple OG Sando with the aforementioned crispy chicken, butter pickle chips, and ranch, but cranked up with lettuce, tomato, melted vegan cheese and a generous glazing of vegan hot honey.
