Modern Spanish Naval Aviation was created as recently as November 1954, but its history can be traced back to 1912, when alongside developments around the world Spanish innovators looked at the potential of aircraft as military weapons.

In 1912, a cadre of young naval officers began their training to become pilots and observers at the Air Force Academy of Cuatro Vientos Air Base. During the next five years, the Air Force continued to train naval aviators but that changed on September 15, 1917, by virtue of a Royal decree signed by King Alfonso XIII as a direct consequence of lessons
