BRILLIANT DISGUISE

WHILE THE history of 9600HP, the world’s oldest E-type (see p36), is well-known and well-documented, the same can’t be said of the equivalent XK8. As a rough-looking mule fromthe early days of the car’s development, it has generally been kept out of sight since its work finished in the Mid-Nineties. Plus, the matt black paint and glass-fibre panels do much to hide its appearance, so it looks far from refined and luxurious, qualities for which the XK8 is renown. However, it is an important car. As the first running proto type to look like an XK8, it played a significant role in getting the model approved.
