TY SEGALL FROM HIGH SCHOOL PARTIES TO PSYCHEDELIC ROCK WITH THE FUZZ MAN
“I’m stoked that Ty Segall agreed to be part of this special issue of Rhythm,” Taylor says. “Like me, he grew up in Laguna Beach, California, and it’s really interesting to talk to another musician from that small town who is finding their own path and doing their own thing.
“I remember the first time I heard Ty on the radio, I couldn’t help but sit up and take notice of the cool, ‘John Lennon-y’ voice that was coming at me from the speakers in my car. When I went and checked him out, it was incredible to see how many different collaborations and projects he’s been involved in after originally starting out on drums, and I’ve been watching proudly ever since.
“I really don’t know how to label him, because he’s all over the mountain – from the Hot Chocolate Every 1’s A Winner cover, to the crazy ’60s psychedelic stuff that he does… Not only is Ty a great drummer, a great artist and a great songwriter, like all my favourite musicians he has his own thing going on. I’m a big fan, and I love that the art he is producing is cool and different, and that it stands out from the crowd…
Taylor: “So, how did you get into music in the first place?”
Ty: “My dad was actually a drummer, so I would play along to that and sound horrible! Even though my parents were cool about the noise, my neighbours ended up hating me...and the cops knew me by name as they would have to keep coming around to tell me not to play after 10pm!”
