NARROWED HORIZONS
AT HOMERS:
HANNAH WHITELEY – UK
As an athlete I’m used to pushing out of my comfort zone, but I’ve been through a rollercoaster of emotions in the last year. In the beginning I enjoyed the novelty of slowing down and having a break from travelling, packing and unpacking, shooting, competing and always being on the go. It can all be quite exhausting, but I soon missed being busy and travelling.
My anxiety was high, especially going into winter time in the northwest of England. My sessions have been frosty and short! Lytham St Annes is on a huge beach and is my home spot. The tide travels far and creates some really fun lagoons. Within a 30 minute drive I can find a spot to kite in every wind direction. Most of the locals in Lytham don’t even wear wetsuit gloves or boots in the winter; they’re so crazy and hard as nails. They’ve definitely helped motivate me a few times to get the session in!
I have enjoyed working on some different projects in the UK, but I’m looking forward to being able to travel again.
BEN BEHOLZ – GERMANY
The current situation will probably push most of us to our limits. The great art for me has always been about being in the right place at the right time, so I bought a motorhome that I now live in year round, allowing me to follow the wind, place to place.
Lasy year I just focused on where I was allowed to go, which even included an ice hole at 1,850 metres above sea level! Restrictions also drove me to numerous new kitesurfing locations in Germany that I’d previously not been aware of.
The interesting realisation is that there is always a way, even if the situation may initially seem hopeless. Just go with the flow!
BRANDON SCHEID – USA
I clued into the initial news blips on the ‘novel corona virus’ back in December 2019.
