I did not come from a road running ultra background.

THE TRAIL SCENE WAS PRETTY SMALL WHEN I FIRST GOT INTO IT IN 1998.

Race-wise, the Puffer in Cape Town had been going since 1995, and the first Skyrun was held the year before. Those two were virtually the only two races on the calendar that you could consider to be trail races back then. Events were listed on the road race calendar.

I did not come from a road running ultra background. Prior to running my first SkyRun in 1998, the longest event I had run was a 21km road race. Most other entrants came with a Comrades Marathon pedigree.

Admittedly, that was quite a step up, and SkyRun as a self-navigated race would have been quite an additional challenge without GPS back then. But fortunately for me I was used to using map
