Solutions for patchy plant growth
In this series we look at some of the common problems facing soil health. We explore the symptoms you might notice, how we can diagnose the root causes and what treatments, and indeed cures, can be implemented.
Symptoms
Some areas of pasture or crop may not be doing as well as the rest. If the poor patches are small or particularly different, the solution most likely lies in the soil. You’ll need to work out what the differences are by digging, looking at the plant roots, soil structure and any guilty-looking pests, and perhaps making a nutrient analysis of the plant shoots.
Diagnosis
The first thing to think of in diagnosing patches is whether there are differences in water status. Are the poor growing areas either too dry at times, or waterlogged? Is
