A BIT OF A LAUGH

‘Please welcome Michael McIntyre,” announced the studio floor manager. Even I nearly said,

“Who?” A ripple of polite applause greeted me as I walked on to the set. It was surreal and disorientating. Having seen a programme on television and then being on the set is a weird experience, like you’ve jumped into the telly. The set looked vast, the distance between the guests so much bigger than I was expecting.

Jimmy [Carr, the host] was quipping away with the audience to roars of laughter and the show hadn’t even started yet. Every time Jimmy, Sean [Lock, team captain] or Johnny [Vegas, panellist] uttered a word, the audience erupted.

For the first 15 minutes, I was in essence an audience member, laughing with everyone else. But
