N THE 1970s and ’80s, the Swiss valleys resounded to the sound of atelier doors slamming as watch factory after watch factory closed. Japanese quartz was cheap, cool, accurate and selling fast. Bad news indeed for a watchmaking nation that relied on selling solid, luxury mechanical timepieces. The Swiss needed an answer.
