As far as iconic characters in fiction go, Winnie-the-Pooh – he of red t-shirt and Hundred Acre Wood fame – and his pals have got to be some of the most easily recognisable, best loved and enduringly popular.
This year marks the 95th anniversary of the publication of AA Milne’s first book of Winnie-the-Pooh stories, illustrated so vividly by EH Shepard – and to celebrate the occasion Harper Collins has released a brand-new story collection. Once There Was a Bear is a beautiful hardback written by Jane Riordan and illustrated by artist and writer Mark Burgess. While neither author nor illustrator are attempting a direct imitation of the original, both are clearly taking stylistic cues from it.
