Southern Sky Operations

If you’re familiar with the area, it is the commercial park next door to Radiant Lighting on the M1 freeway. Not only is Southern Sky Operations a retail gunshop, it has a wholesale division and is also heavily involved in firearm training. I was invited to attend a civilian training and shooting day at its indoor ranges in Wynberg, where I met with head of training Darryl Larsen.

Darryl, or ‘Dee’ as some people call him, is not your average, conservative Tactical Timmy type of firearm trainer, nor does he pretend to have all the answers. I found him a very intelligent, down-to-earth kind of guy who clearly has years of firearm experience. Yet he freely admits that there are rapid changes in the firearm environment and, as a trainer, it can be difficult to stay abreast of the latest innovations without getting caught up in all of the gimmicks.
