The University of Canterbury’s Student Volunteer Army is best known for cleaning up after the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. But they’re still working. With a base of 3000 students, they’re experts in mass mobilisation in times of need. So when a massive rainstorm swept across the Canterbury plains in early June, SVA’s Foundation arm organised ex-farmers and energetic locals to help out in any way they could. The students were entering exam period, and the SVA was skeptical about how many students could take time out to help repair the damage. They decided to have a quick meeting anyway — and then got to work. We talked to SVA University of Canterbury Club Logistics Manager Nicole Langedijk to see how it went
