It was pleasing to see North & South shine a light on what has been an ongoing problem in rural areas (“Down on the Farm” by Paul Gorman, August 2021). Depression and suicide have come to the fore frequently during the last 10 years. Sadly, these conditions have been around for much longer.

I believe it is untrue for our prime minister to say that there is no divide between urban and rural communities and to dismiss it as a situation we all have to face. Urban dwellers have become the larger section of New Zealand’s population, with probably the majority now having little or no contact with rural life.
