Last winter, Barry Hughes, the 44-year-old co-owner of Okarito Kayaks, had a lot of time on his hands. Business was slow, due mainly to Covid-19, and Hughes decided to make the most of it and get rid of some weeds. So he put the word out, hoping for, say, a dozen volunteers. What he got instead was nationwide media coverage, generous donations from major businesses and around a hundred people who came this March from places as far away as Invercargill and Dairy Flat, north of Auckland.

Okarito is a West Coast village of about 38 residents, located on the shores
