HOW I WROTE

The 241st edition of Landfall is Emma Neale’s last as editor. She has been custodian of New Zealand’s longest-running literary and arts journal since 2017. Before returning to a life focused mainly on editing books and her own writing, she talks about how one goes about working with such a tradition and making a periodical such as Landfall relevant.

Who did you make Landfall for?

Passionate readers. I was wanting to widen the readership — an, for instance, are often directed at people who might not necessarily subscribe to . I was thinking about a keen reader open to variety, to learning about new artists, and who wanted to experience a range of voices and styles.
