Not enough use is made in road racing of creativity. There’s not enough imagination in the way that races are designed. Yes, some organisers like to leave their own little stamp on their races from time to time with the odd bit of tinkering: the bonus sprints at the Tour de France, and the Golden Kilometre at the Benelux Tour. But these are minor tweaks. We need some bigger, bolder moves.
