Furniture maker Alfred Newall was at school when he first discovered the joys of turning a piece of wood on a lathe. He remembers making a candlestick, and the pleasure he got from applying the chisel against the spinning block of timber to transform it into a smooth and undulating column, creating in the process something pleasing, decorative and useful.
