My primary form of income for over 10 years has been compliance inspections of the Government-backed Ultrafast Broadband (UFB) rollout.
This encompasses the fibre optic builds in every city and town, nearly 200 cellphone towers installed by the Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) and hundreds of tiny Wi-Fi sites on hill tops and ridges built by Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP).
I’ve driven most of the streets in every Kiwi town and driven up (or climbed) vast areas of ridge lines and hilltops in some of the most remote parts of the country.
In the South Island, I hire SUVs to do the load carrying, but in the North Island I drive a 1994 Land Rover Discovery 300Tdi auto that I have set-up to meet my requirements.
I could afford to drive a new ute but I have learned as a contractor that it doesn’t pay to look as flash as your client when turning up to a job.
Old but interesting 4WDs are a good look.
