UNTIL the sale in May 1976, Malahide Castle to the north of Dublin was one of the Irish houses with the longest history of occupancy by the same family. If one overlooks a brief interruption in the Cromwellian period, the Talbots had been there since 1185. It is possible that their neighbours, the St Lawrences of Howth, settled on what was to be the site of their castle a year or two beforehand, perhaps in 1177, but the earliest history of that family is overlaid by romantic myth.
