COUNTRY LIFE
A NEWSPAPER correspondent has been directing attention to a great increase of the tawny owl in of country people. When they talk of the hoolet’s cry they seldom mean anything but the tawny owl. The other owls familiar around London do not appeal so much to the poetry of the night. The barn owl is beautiful and mysterious, but his voice is not musical. Country people are not far out when they call him the ‘screech owl’. The little owl has become extremely numerous, only he has a sharp voice like that of an angry cat. He sits on a branch and becks and bows at blackbirds and thrushes as if in mockery and altogether behaves in a way not considered seemly in an owl, as impudent and saucy as a bird can be.
