Preview: South Africa’s local government election 2021

At the launch of its election manifesto, the ANC made several promises. These included the reduction of unemployment through an extensive public employment programme, electricity reforms with a focus on renewable energy, and a reduction in the waiting period for electricity connections to new houses. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the ANC would improve maintenance of water and sewerage infrastructure, and that more land would be made available to citizens, informal settlements would be upgraded, and municipal zoning regulations would be changed to better integrate housing, recreation and economic opportunities.

The ANC would also amend or repeal restrictive by-laws on trading, land use, urban production of crops, and other regulations that prevented people from earning a living. This included the removal or reduction of licence fees for traders and small businesses,
