The Great Central Railway’s Gorton Works – which must never be confused with the Beyer, Peacock factory just down the road – was never high on Steam World readers’ ‘must visit’ list in the 1950s and 1960s because the engines it overhauled were nowhere near as attractive as those gathered at Swindon, Crewe or Doncaster.

For what it missed in glamour was surpassed by its solid, high quality engineering. Why else would LNER CME Sir Nigel Gresley entrust this east Manchester works with the casting the cylinders for his ‘A4s’ and many other of his engines?
