$69.3 million. That’s how much Mike Winkelmann’s digital art called Everydays—The First 5,000 Days fetched in an auction at Christie’s this March. It not only set the record for the most expensive work of art sold online, but also made Winkelmann, the digital artist, more commonly known as Beeple, “among the top three most valuable living artists”, according to the British auction house.
To put it in perspective, the highest a painting by Amrita Sher-Gil—considered a pioneer of modern Indian art—has fetched at an auction is ₹37.8 crore, or $5.14 million, in July this year.
Even more astounding is that Beeple’s art collection was not an original physical copy, but an original digital copy that was auctioned as an NFT, or non-fungible token. And he is not alone.
