Inevitably, angling clothing has moved on rapidly over the decades thanks to advancing technology. Gone are the days of stiff outdoor wax jackets that needed constant re-proofing, woolly jumpers that were bulky to wear and heavy when damp. Who can forget sou’wester-type hats and the heavy waterproof bib and braces outfit that barely let your legs bend?
With winter imminent, here’s a breakdown of the key items of clothing.
BASE LAYERS
In the old days, keeping warm meant adding extra layers and that belief still exists today, but things have moved on. A proper base layer designed to hold heat but dispel sweat in cold weather, such as a Long John type two-piece set, is the way to go and is worth at least two layers of normal clothing and multiple t-shirts.
A Merino wool base layer is often quoted as the best. Offering natural warmth by trapping body heat in small air pockets, it also releases excess heat to keep your body at a more natural temperature when active. It is a naturally anti-bacterial material too, so body odour does not stick to
