Thirteen years in, and Drag Race is continuing to break new ground. Besides its plethora of Emmy nominations and wins - RuPaul recently became the most awarded Black artist of all time - the acclaimed series has made (necessary) strides when it comes to representing the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent of transgender entertainters. In 2021 alone, Gottmik entered the US werkroom as the franchise’s first trans male competitor, ultimately making the final, while Kylie Sonique Love became the first trans queen on a season hosted by Mama Ru to emerge victorious - and the first to do so since Angele Anang conquered Drag Race Thailand in 2018.
Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait as long for another trans competitor to take home the crown. Just two months after Kylie’s victory, the Dutch spin-off crowned Vanessa Van Cartier following a sickening lip-sync smackdown with My Little Puny to Shirley Bassey’s This Is My Life.
