FOUR YEARS AGO, MARYANN AND BRIAN WALKER had been toying with the idea of a sea change when an old miner’s cottage, just minutes from the beach, challenged them to take it on. The original weatherboard house, built in 1904, was nestled on bushland between the Illawarra Escarpment and the ocean at Thirroul, north of Wollongong, NSW.
