oday’s yacht chandlery developed out of the business of the chandler making wax candles which, before electric light, were an important means of illumination aboard ship and in the workshop. For obvious of 1832 advising on regulations for the ports and harbours of England, noted that "work done by candle-light, either by joiners or other tradesmen" was prohibited within the dock walls, and that "all chips and dirt made must be carefully collected and removed". Still, history is ablaze with vessels destroyed by fire, at sea and in dock, as a result of upset or forgotten candles.
