Review: Sequential Prophet-5
In 1978, the Sequential Prophet 5 was a veritable sensation, as it was the first polyphonic synthesizer with storable sounds and was, subsequently, used in countless hits. Four decades have passed since then, but the consistently beautiful and rich basic sound of this vintage classic still knows how to inspire today and plays a leading role in more than just the trendy Synth- and Retrowave.
After a whole series of different Prophet models, Dave Smith has finally reissued the Prophet-5, as faithful to the original as possible and yet a bit better: USB/MIDI, Aftertouch, Velocity and a switchable filter are all available for purists.
Another Prophet?
The experts were a bit surprised when Dave Smith announced the replica of the Prophet-5. After all, his company already has a modern and expanded edition of the former flagship synthesizer in its lineup with the likewise polyphonic analog Prophet-6. And parallel to the new edition of the Prophet-5, the Prophet-6 was even given some improvements via a free firmware update, such as the new Vintage mode, which bring this synthesizer even closer to the original in terms of sound.
