When you are standing in a quiet glen on the west highland coast, looking out over the mirror-like Lochbroom, it is easy to feel at peace in the serenity of the scenery, when all you can hear is the flow of the river and the chatter of birds. It is not hard to forget that only 200 years ago, this landscape was a hive of activity. The peace you can enjoy today is a far cry from the amount of activity you would have experienced in the early 19th century.
The now tranquil glen was once the home of over 400 men, women and children, going about their lives. The air would have been alive with the sounds of fishermen, blacksmiths, women singing and children playing, yet the glen is now quiet. 1820
