AS well as adding structure and colour, shrubs attract a wealth of wildlife into the garden and provide them with food, habitat and shelter. Those rich in nectar – such as buddleja – lure scores of butterflies and bees, while those laden with hips or berries offer birds the nourishment they need to see them through the bleak winter months. Birds like to take shelter in shrubs, both to hide from predators and escape rain or summer heat, and some (including blackbirds and wrens) make nests in larger bushes.
