Primroses and polyanthus
This week it’s:
THE primula family is huge! Some 500 species, and countless varieties and hybrids, make this a diverse family of plants. Perennial, bedding and alpine primulas are the most popular. Most flower from March to mid-summer, while bedding primulas and polyanthus varieties bloom throughout winter and spring, and even late autumn. It’s these last two groups that I think we should take a look at here. They can be planted now, either from bought-in plants or your own spring or summer-sown seed – or even from autumn divisions.
There are two plural options for the word ‘cactus’ – ‘cacti’ or ‘cactuses’. However, with ‘polyanthus’ there is only one plural option – and it’s not ‘polyanthi’!
Prims to delight
BEDDING primroses loosely resemble the common primrose (), with flowers held singly on individual stalks.
