OMEWHAT larger, and with a longer tail, than the common teal, the Baikal teal () is a particularly attractive wildfowl species. It is not closely related to the common teal, which is in the genus and instead is considered to be the only member of genus a word that was derived for Siberia and the Ancient Greek for a duck. The common name comes from Lake Baikal in the southern part of eastern Siberia in Russia. This is the deepest lake in the world and home to many plants and animals that are found nowhere else.
