Breeding cockies the easy way and the hard way
THE aim of this series of articles is to give the reader an insight into the recent history of this beautiful small cockatoo and also to offer practical tips on how to care for your birds and, if you wish to, how to breed them in an aviary environment.
The cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is found throughout Australia with the exception of the humid coastal areas of the east, north and south. This fact alone tells us a great deal about this very versatile species, because Australia is a vast continent and for a bird to be found over such a large area it must have some very special qualities. Indeed, we see a number of these when they are kept by hobbyist bird breeders and also enthusiasts who keep these sweet birds as pets and companion birds.
Like many of the commonly kept parrot species, cockatiels) which does suggest that the species really is a cockatoo; it had been assumed in the past by some that it represented a link between parakeets and cockatoos.
