Figured Sycamore Jewellery Box
Ever since I discovered the work of Japanese master craftsman Kenji Suda, I have wanted to make my own version of one of his pieces. My chance came when a client commissioned me to make a jewellery box. I named this the MYH box, which are the initials of its new owners.
I wanted to make a carcase with no visible joinery, so I used secret mitre dovetails as the main joinery. I decided to use some beautiful quartersawn ripple sycamore from a wood store that I’ve had in my workshop for almost a year.
Because I didn’t have enough for the whole carcase, I used the ripple sycamore for the top and the sides and just a pair of strips to cover the bottom front part. For the hidden part of the box, I used some not-so-figured sycamore. The back was made
