“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men. Gang aft agley,” once mused Robert Burns. Roughly translated this means no matter how well one plans a project something will still go wrong. Little would Burns have known, when writing his famous poem ‘To a mouse’ in the mid 1780s, that he would be perfectly describing the life of a working photographer!
This fact comes sharply into focus when, on a train into Newcastle, I receive an apologetic phone call from Sarah Deane, who I’m on my way to meet. The plan for this morning is for me to shadow Sarah on a corporate portrait shoot, in her lovely city centre studio. In a valiant effort to ensure it looks its best for myself and today’s client, Sarah has refreshed the paintwork (well in advance I should add) and alas, not all has run smoothly.
