MIKE ETHERINGTON-SMITH had stepped in at short notice as course-designer for this event, and to achieve a 10min 7sec optimum time in the tight space sent riders on repeated loops and through twists and turns. The track weaved in and out of the racetrack, with the inevitable changes of going from dirt to grass, and up and down what little terrain was available.
“It’s not an easy place to design - it’s compact and very flat, so it’s my job to bring it to life in some way,” said Mike.
Ingrid Klimke said it would feel like a jump-off, while after riding the track, Piggy March and Izzy Taylor likened it to a one-day course over a three-day distance.
A 10,000-strong crowd enjoying the sunshine upped the challenge as many horses had not seen such a spectacle since before Covid-19.
