A recording that really made me stop in my tracks and lie on the floor to listen – which I think is the criteria for a fantastic recording – was Radu Lupu playing Brahms’s Three Intermezzi, Op. 117. I had decided to learn those pieces and I don’t normally tend to listen to things I’m learning, but I did on this occasion and wasn’t disappointed. The way he plays it is just so pure and absolutely heartbreaking, but in a very comforting way.
