Hirohata Merc heads to Mecum Kissimmee

The famed Hirohata Merc, one of the most high-profile custom cars ever created, is heading for Mecum Auctions’ block this January in Kissimmee, Fla. The family of the car’s long-time owner said in an Instragram post this past spring that they planned to sell it. A private sale never materialized and now the family will try to find a buyer with Mecum’s help.

The car was named for its first owner, Bob Hirohata, of Los Angeles. He bought the 1951 Mercury in 1952 as a used car and took it to George and Sam Barris at their Barris Kustoms shop. The brothers chopped the roof and made it
