SATURNALIA
The holly plant originated with the ancient Celtic Druids and the Romans’ pagan festival of Saturnalia. The Druids revered holly for bearing fruit in winter and hung it in their homes for good luck. To honor Saturn, the god of agriculture, the Romans gave holly wreathes as gifts. Later, Christians searched for ways to honor Jesus’ birth and adopted holly as a symbol of his blood and crown of thorns.
