A FLETCHER & CO LTD
Before I begin, I should tell readers that Ron Johnston was the managing director of A, Fletcher & Co. Ltd. of Station Road Ibstock, Leics, my boss, mentor and friend for more than 50 years. Everyone knew Ron by the name ‘Jonno’ from his days as captain of Belle Vue ‘Aces’ Speedway team. I use this version here with respect When I arrived at Fletcher’s in 1964, the firm ran a mixed fleet consisting of eight and six-wheeler TVW and Guy lorries. After Sentinel ceased production, Ron Mason acquired a Guy Motor’s dealership which was centred at Mayfair Garage, Fazeley, near Tamworth, Staffs. At one time, Fletcher’s had several Guy Warrior Mk.1 ‘Chinese Sixes’. These were reportedly converted at Mayfair, the wheelbases extended and the second steer axle fitted. Arthur Alcock was in charge of the workshop. Arthur’s name was often mentioned in Fletcher’s workshop but I cannot recall any of us actually meeting him.
The heavier type of Sentinel chassis were sent to Warrington for conversion to eight-wheelers, they had full air brakes on three axles. CFA 559 had the Williams type cab, I believe, this was driven by George Phillips from Burtonon-Trent, (aka ‘The Blonde Bomber’). I always got on well with George, always a laugh, especially the day I stood at the diesel pumps watching him fuel up and checking the engine oil. The old Gardner 6 LW liked a drop of oil – suddenly, after topping up the engine, there was a drop of oil left in the jug – George tipped it in to the fuel tank – he reckons it would give the old girl a bit extra lubrication?
