Root cause

INFECTION in the tooth roots, termed apical infection, can appear in many different forms. A pocket of pus that accumulates as a result is known as an abscess. Clinical signs may be obvious, such as nasal discharge or facial swelling, or very subtle – the horse favouring one side of his mouth while he eats or displaying problems while being ridden.

Signs of apical infection can vary. Generally, infection of the mandibular (lower) cheek teeth creates a swelling on the bottom of the jaw, which may burst out into a surface
