AT THE height of his fame, in the mid Seventies, John Denver acted as a healing balm for an America torn apart by Watergate and Vietnam.
Singing of the enduring power of love and endless joys of the natural world, John projected an image of ‘aw shucks’ innocence that was not entirely confected, although in later years he would confess to slightly overdoing the phrase ‘far out’.
To Middle America he was the acceptable face of hippiedom, purveying the flower children’s message of peace and love but without the sex, drugs and rock and roll. That would come later. But to the music press, both in the United States and over here, Denver’s deceptively clean-cut image was an object of ridicule.
