WHITING TO THE RESCUE

YEARS AGO, WHITING WERE undervalued and people would refer to them as “fish for the cat”. They were nothing more than a by-catch for the cod anglers, but times have changed.

These days whiting are more likely to be dominate a catch and if you are very lucky you might land a cod.

Like the UK and Ireland, officially The Netherlands is a country of four seasons but sea fishing really only has two, summer and winter, both with a very distinct character, their own fish species and a very different group of anglers. You have the fervent summer-fishers, who are on the hunt for mainly soles, bass and small sharks, like smoothhounds, and those who prefer to target winter fish, being mainly dabs, cod and whiting.
