Saints Row’s answer, in the form of this self-titled reboot, is ‘back to the drawing board’. “It’s so difficult to even think of where you would go past Saints Row 4 – ruler of the galaxy, superpowers, you’re president of a planet that’s been destroyed, there isn’t even an Earth any more,” says chief creative officer Jim Boone, as he shows us pre-alpha gameplay that already looks well-polished.
Jeremy Bernstein, who joined the team in 2020 as lead narrative designer on missions, chimes in: “I played Saints Row 4, and I thought to myself, ‘Where are they going to go next? Do they take on God?’ And then Gat Out Of Hell came out. I’m like ‘Ah! I’m out, I’m out, I got nothing left,’” he laughs.
