very Tuesday, the New York independent bookshop where I work part-time displays stacks of the week’s new titles, all waiting to break out of the pack like eager reality-show contestants. The books that appear in greatest number are bubble-wrapped in prepublication hype and sealed in individual cartons with green fluorescent tape and the stern embargoed warning: “Do Not Open Until…”
