Having previously looked at internal tuning components within the engine, and as this series comes to its penultimate instalment, we now switch to the exhaust (or expansion) pipe. This is a critical area of performance as the exhaust is a major factor in how the power created is then delivered. Do you want something that is peaky, offering quick acceleration, or a pipe that gives a bigger spread of power from low down, ideal for touring? The quest to build the perfect exhaust has been going on for decades to provide one that gives the best all-around performance.
There is the option of changing between pipes if a manufacturer offers several versions with different power characteristics, depending on if you are using it around town or touring. That would incur costs and require setting up, but some owners are prepared to accept this.
