At some point we’ve all missed a gear change and experienced that shattering ‘thunk’ as the gearbox sorts itself out. The impact can be felt through the saddle so you can imagine what’s happening inside the engine casing. In fact, an engine doesn’t need to be badly treated or even heavily tuned for the gearbox to be stressed. With every gear change even the most careful rider will exert force on the drivetrain. To absorb some of these forces all manufacturers insert a rubber or sprung damper at some point in the drivetrain. This is called a cush drive.
