The link between unemployment and household food insecurity
Household food insecurity is a major problem in South Africa, but may be difficult to notice as it is hidden in the country’s national food security data. Moreover, the commercial agriculture sector’s continued success may be the most effective mask for household food insecurity in this country. While we should applaud the sector’s continued great performance, it is the food that ends up on people’s plates, not the sector’s performance, which households buy. And for that, they need income.
