RICHARD HALL bought his first Land Rover, a Series III, just after his 18th birthday and has since owned, maintained and restored these vehicles for over 30 years now. He runs a small Land Rover repair and restoration business in Norfolk and every month he lets off steam in LRM.
THE phone rings. It’s a new prospective customer on the line. “My Series III needs an engine rebuild. Is that the sort of thing that you do?” To this question there are two possible answers. The first is “yes, now when do you need it done by?” Since the start of the Covid pandemic my workload has steadily ramped up. I was busy before, now I am swamped and turning away work pretty much every day, just because there is no way I can do it within a reasonable time frame. Talking to other people in the old car business, everyone seems to be in the same position. There just aren’t enough of us to go round. Certainly I can rebuild a Series III engine, or a Defender engine for that matter. I have just shipped a 300Tdi off to Angola. But
