How the wheel turns
THE invention of the wheel was crucial to the development of humankind. Historians have worked out that it happened in Mesopotamia about 6 500 years ago during the Copper Age (4500-3300 BC), a period when humans developed tools and weapons from copper, but they still used stone tools as well.
The combination of a wheel mounted on an axle has made modern machinery possible. Without the wheel, today’s technology would never have developed, and we wouldn’t have any of the industries we have today. Here’s how it all started.
LATE IN THE GAME
The wheel made its appearance relatively late in the development of humankind. Other include needles for sewing, woven cloth, rope, woven mats, boats and manmade canals, lute and harps.
